What could be cooler for a summer months than a toga party. Just imagine Cleopatra as she puts on her royal robes, lies on a couch of gold, and applies the asp to her breast. Don’t forget the snake! Or Ceasar exclaiming "infamy, infamy - they've all got it in for me!" For inspiration watch the Gladiator trailer. Fabulous – made me want to watch it again. Carry on Cleo is a hoot. You can spend hours on YouTube looking at Roman themed films. Very helpful.

DIY options: Don’t just drape a sheet around yourself but think about all the accessories. Buy a meter of leather strap or cord to make straps to criss cross up your legs for sandals. Lots of cheap gold jewellery – markets are a great place to find bracelets. Grapes are good sewn to your shoulder . Here’s a gold laurel leaf headdress for a pound or a fancy option for only two pounds. Grab your mum’s long scarf and drape it around the front of you. Secure on the shoulders with two cheap round gold broaches – again markets are the best place for these. There are loads of great costumes on US sites. Pick one that says immediate shipping to the UK.
